Hiking Trail from Verride to Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Saúde (Montemor-o-Velho)
This hiking trail from Verride to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Saúde, in Montemor-o-Velho municipality, was organized by Luis Moreira, in partnership with AFUV (Associação Filarmónica União Verridense) under the motto “Walk for Health”.
Starting early in AFUV headquarters, the walkers followed by “Direita” Street towards “Quinta do Cardal”. After this, we left the village houses behind and in an area known locally for “Quinta da Pele”, we began the descent to the ancient Baths of Brulho. Here the landscape is predominantly made of farmland shredded in various shades of brown and green, according to the maturity of the crops in this time of year.
The old spa consists now on four abandoned walls and a green gate with the inscription “Quinta do Brulho” were once was a fountain for the treatment of kidney, stomach, rheumatism and skin diseases.
The landscape is predominantly made of farmland shredded in various shades of brown and green, according to the maturity of the crops in this time of year.
By a well-defined trail, we began the ascent to the Abrunheira Valley. Now at a slower pace, we enjoy the fresh air among pines, cedars and dense vegetation that sometimes opens to show us the sights around. On the top of the hill I see already the village and looking away to the valley, the vineyards designed geometrically gain strength and wait a few more months for the harvest of the fruit. The fallow fields are in this time of year covered by a green mantle that invites us to a deep breath and contemplation.
We reached Abrunheira and by the main street we take the direction of Reveles. We walked on asphalt and our eyes reaches the sea and “Edgar Cardoso” Bridge in Figueira da Foz. Under it passes the Mondego river which also molds this riverside landscape.
Before the ascent to Reveles cemetery, we go to the right towards Carril and Presalves. The sun is now higher and the heat is only mitigated when, from “Alto de Sevelha”, we went down a narrow track on the shade of a dense vegetation that delimits the path.
We find again the old Baths of Brulho and this time we went to Sevelha where we rested in the old washhouse. Its waters, as well as the surrounding ditches, are used for the irrigation of farmland, where subsistence crops prevail.
By “Caminho da Almiara” we ascend to Presalves. When reaching the asphalt road, we turned left onto Carril and shortly after the Reveles sign, we turned right on a gravel road, following the signs of “Nossa Senhora da Saúde” and Picnic Park.
Baixo Mondego and their flooded rice fields, waiting to grow, assume here a spectacular landscape.
The end of this hike was near and always downwards, we quickly reached the Chapel of “Nossa Senhora da Saúde”.
It was in the Picnic Park that near the Chapel that we relaxed with a delicious barbecue prepared by the organization. Congratulations to all for the good work and thanks for this wonderful morning.
