Caminhada pela História de Vila Viçosa (Vila Viçosa)

Today was a day to unwind after discovering the Royal Road. We enjoyed the refreshing pool at the Solar dos Mascarenhas Hotel and, after some snacks at one of the many restaurants in the village, we strolled through the peaceful streets, each brimming with stories to tell.

The built heritage of Vila Viçosa is impressive and deserves a closer look. The hotel that served as our base for these days of exploration in Central Alentejo is housed in a 16th-century building, a former residence of noblemen from the Portuguese court. The rooms were built in the gardens and stables of this historic property.

About 300 meters from the hotel lies the landmark of this village, often called the “Princess of Alentejo”: the Ducal Palace. Commissioned in 1502 by Duke Jaime I of Bragança, it served as the royal summer residence for centuries. This imposing palace, approximately 110 meters long, is a beautiful example of Mannerism, a style that flourished in Europe between the mid-16th and mid-17th centuries. Its façade features the region’s characteristic marble.

The architectural heritage of Vila Viçosa is impressive and deserves closer attention.

The Ducal Palace impresses not only with its exterior architecture but also with its richly decorated interior, filled with halls that tell the story of an era. Highlights include the painted ceilings, art collections, and porcelain pieces that attest to the refined taste of the Bragança family. A guided tour of this monument is a journey into the past, where the splendor of bygone times can still be felt.

Continuing the exploration of Vila Viçosa, the castle is another must-see landmark. Situated at the highest point of the village, this medieval-origin castle offers a magnificent view over the Alentejo fields. Inside, visitors will find the Hunting Museum and the Archaeology Museum, which enhance the experience with a dive into the history and traditions of the region. The robust walls stand as a testament to the strategic importance of this site throughout the centuries.

Another highlight is the Church of Saint John the Evangelist, located in Praça da República. Also known as the Church of the College or Saint Bartholomew, this 17th-century temple is an architectural gem. Its interior is a fine example of Baroque architecture, contrasting with the simplicity of its exterior, exuding a unique serenity that makes it a place for contemplation.
