Foz do Arelho Walkways (Caldas da Rainha)
Foz do Arelho walkways have an extension of only 800m long but its location on the cliffs north of Óbidos Lagoon and Foz do Arelho beach makes this an unmissable hike for those who visit this region.
Although small in extension, the landscaped value of Foz do Arelho walkways is enormous.
We started the walk on the most northern viewpoint and we continued south with the sea on our right. Although small in extension, the landscaped value of Foz do Arelho walkways is enormous.
Located in a sensitive area of cliffs and dune systems, the project was designed to protect the unique and rich biodiversity of this place, limiting also the access to the several viewpoints now reconverted and therefore safer for those who visit them.
In front of us, a tongue of sand separates Óbidos Lagoon from the sea. On one side of the lagoon, the peculiar beach of calm waters, which joining the usual wind felt in this region, meets the ideal conditions for the practice of some sports, such as Windsurfing and Kitesurfing. On the other side we find a Blue Flag beach (quality certified beach) with great extension, bathed by Atlantic Ocean and much requested in the bathing season.
In the distance Berlengas Islands are a constant presence on the horizon.
Wooden stairs links various sections and levels on the cliffs. They are no insurmountable obstacle, but they make it difficult for who accompanies a baby trolley as we were.
On the way back, and to avoid the stairs, we choose to walk part of the bicycle path of the Atlantic Road, next to Visconde de Moraes Street.
In resume, this is a short hike, without shadows and subject to the elements, especially to the winds that can be strong. But this day was perfect, only a slight breeze blew and the temperature was not very high which allowed us to enjoy the walk.
