Cockles from Nazaré
The town of Nazaré is now internationally known for its “cannon”, a submerged canyon of tectonic origin, located off its coast which causes the formation of a huge size waves, the “giant waves” of Nazaré. These makes the delights of the bravest surfers and attract to this village in the Leiria district thousands of tourists and curious to check on site the amazing force of nature.
Now I must confess that although I like a lot of the sea, all the sports practiced there and can not live without the daily smell of the sea air, what attracts me to Nazaré and forces me to stop whenever I pass by, are the cockles with onions. This day was no exception.
…a soup to comfort and a dose of cockles with onion to enjoy.
It was after a few days out of the country, when travelling home, that I decided to take a break to stretch my legs in Nazaré. After a walk on the seafront promenade and through the village streets for about 3kms , I went to “Largo do Elevador” where in the “Casa O Santo” I still find the genuineness of the local snacks. There are many other places where you can enjoy this delicacy but for several years I always go to the same, perhaps for its price / quality ratio. My request is always the same, a soup to comfort and a dose of cockles with onion to enjoy. Accompanied with bread and a glass of green wine are perhaps the best way to close the day in this fishing village, now increasingly focused on tourism, focusing on the best of what it has to offer.
I am now able to continue the journey to home.
