At the top of Cabo Girão (Câmara de Lobos – Madeira)

About 580m above sea level, Cabo Girão Viewpoint, is one of the highest cliffs in the world and one of the must-see places of Madeira island. After visiting Fajã dos Padres, we couldn’t end the day without discovering this famous viewpoint.
The name of this cape of dizzying landscapes is “Girão” because there ended the tour of the first reconnaissance trip of the island by João Gonçalves Zarco, upon his discovery.
Even for the most fearless, for those without vertigo, walking “without ground” impresses and imposes some respect.
The viewpoint’s reputation is also due to its skywalk that impresses those who pass by. Even for the most fearless, for those without vertigo, walking “without ground” impresses and imposes some respect. Many were the tourists who ventured, with more or less difficulty, with confident footsteps on the transparent platform that overlooked the cliff beneath our feet.

Maria wasn’t impressed either, and without stopping to think, she moved fearlessly to the glass floor and paced “in the air” back and forth, as if she were flying over that cliff.

We sat a few minutes to enjoy the imposing panoramic view over the coastal area of Câmara de Lobos and Funchal. Several shades of blue merged with each other in a sea and sky diluted on the soft horizon.

And down below, in “Rancho” and “Cabo Girão” fajãs, we counted the small cultivated land that, at the foot of the cliff, were only accessed by sea until 2003. Since then, thanks to the installation of a lift, farmers have a easier access to their crops.
It’s time to return and rest our legs for the next day. The agenda included the “PR8 – Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço” route in Machico.
