Aníbal Tapas (Funchal – Madeira)
On a urban hike to the discover the old area of Funchal, we needed a break to strengthen the stomach. We didn’t want to waste a lot of time and therefore a place to eat some regional snacks would be awesome.
At the end of Santa Maria street, one of the most historical, cultural and tourist attractions in the Madeiran capital, we discovered on a modest corner with “Travessa das Torres”, Aníbal Tapas restaurant. Quite humble and almost unnoticed, it was the menu that caught our attention. We can read on a board several regional snacks at a very reasonable prices, especially considering the tourist area in which this small restaurant / cafe is located. We went in to taste some of those delicacies.
A humble and friendly restaurant with delicious regional snacks.
We started with a homemade soup, like “Lavrador Soup” with vegetables, meat and pasta that was tasty. Meanwhile we asked for an octopus “tapa” and a bonito “tapa” (for those who don’t know this fish, it’s similar to tuna in its texture and color). They were delicious with chopped onion, peppers and parsley, all mixed with olive oil and vinegar. Well served in quantity and accompanied with sliced bread were enough for the three of us, so we couldn’t taste the swordfish roe “tapa” that must stay for the next opportunity. If you prefer you can eat “tapas” in a “sandwich” format, ie the same snacks but inside a bread. It’s just a matter of taste and appetite!
We returned to our hike, now refreshed and well compounded with these regional snacks.
